Here at BIOS, we believe that when working with farms overseas, brands lose their ability to focus on quality control. CBD comes from hemp and it matters where the hemp plant is grown.
While the primary ingredient is cannabidiol (CBD), there is an entire spectrum working together that includes, multiple flavonoids, phytonutrients, neuroprotective antioxidants, terpenes, and other lesser known cannabinoids. When these all work together, it’s called the “Entourage Effect”. Hemp plants that are grown specifically for CBD contain more resin in their flowering buds. They also contain more of the beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids that are included in the “Entourage Effect”. The CBD that is sourced from hemp that is grown overseas in parts of Europe and Asia, is extracted from the stalk and seed of these plants. Hemp agriculture in the U.S. is considered a specialized practice and many farmers in states such as Kentucky & Colorado grow it specifically for CBD extraction.
Hemp plants are considered “bioaccumulators” which means they are very good at absorbing toxic substances from the soil. Hemp plants from overseas contain negligible amounts of CBD (about 3.5%) and more plants are required for processing them into CBD extracts. Since a higher number of plants are needed, there is a greater chance that the toxins in the soil will make its way into the end product. Hemp grown in the U.S. specifically for CBD extraction, has a higher CBD concentration (about 12%-20%). They are able to grow fewer individual plants and in turn have more time to show the plants attention and care.
